Local Liberal Democrats are celebrating after winning more votes and more council seats than any other party in Winchester and Chandler’s Ford.
The Liberal Democrats won 39% of votes cast, compared to 37% for the Conservatives. Labour were a distant third on 11%, while Ukip trailed on 9%.
The Lib Dems won 9 of the 16 seats up for election in the constituency.
Lib Dem Prospective MP Jackie Porter said: “Thank you to everyone who voted in this year’s election. It’s great to have such a strong team of hard working Liberal Democrat Councillors representing local people. As I was out knocking on doors, local people were really responding to our positive vision for Winchester.”
Lib Dem Patrick Fancett was elected to represent Oliver’s Battery and Badger Farm, becoming the youngest member of the council aged 23. Patrick is also the youngest Lib Dem ever to have been elected to Winchester City Council.
Lucille Thompson returned to the council representing St Paul ward. Lucille replaced Lib Dem councillor Ray Pearce who stood down this year after 28 years' service.
Dominic Hiscock, Richard Izard, Margot Power, Rose Prowse and Jane Rutter were re-elected to serve their local communities on Winchester City Council.
In Chandler's Ford the Lib Dems Alan Broadhurst and Pam Holden-Brown held their seats on Eastleigh Borough Council. The Lib Dems have become the largest party on the Parish Council for the first time. Across Eastleigh the Lib Dems won all the seats they were defending and gained one, Ukip failed to win a single seat. The will continue to run the council, prioritising bringing jobs and investment to Eastleigh Borough and keeping council tax down.
