Winchester Lib Dem team celebrating success in County Council elections

THANK YOU! Best Lib Dem vote in City Council elections since 1998

10.48.00am BST (GMT +0100) Mon 5th May 2008

Winchester Liberal Democrats' positive campaign for a 'greener, fairer and safer Winchester' has led to their winning 12 out of 19 seats up for election in the district council election, achieving the best Lib Dem vote in City Council elections since 1998, gaining a seat from the Conservatives for the second year running, and achieving a swing from the Conservatives to the Liberal Democrats for the second year in succession.

Local Party Chair, Jackie Porter commented: "A big thank you to all our supporters, helpers and voters. We haven't had this high a share of the vote or won so many wards in one day since 1998. Our hardworking candidates and councillors and our positive campaign for a greener, fairer and safer Winchester achieved excellent results. The Conservatives suffered from their broken promises on the city and county council. Labour got a devastatingly bad result: their parliamentary candidate came third in a ward he had previously represented for many years. In several wards Labour came fourth or fifth."

Wards won in the Winchester district were:

  • Colden Common & Twyford

  • Kings Worthy

  • Littleton & Harestock

  • Oliver's Battery & Badger Farm

  • St Barnabas

  • St Bartholomew

  • St John & All Saints

  • St Luke

  • St Paul

  • The Alresfords

  • Whiteley

  • Wickham
