Liberal Democrat campaigner, Martin Tod, has backed National Allotment Week (August 11-18) by getting stuck in helping to weed an allotment in Twyford. He will also be attending Winchester's Park Road allotments open afternoon this Saturday from 2-5 p.m.

Mr Tod commented:

"Food prices are going through the roof. People also want to know more about where their food comes from. No wonder allotments are getting more and more popular - at least here in Winchester.

Allotments are a great way for people to get cheap, local, healthy food. There are almost no food miles and allotment holders can also choose to cut right back on chemicals.

There's a big waiting list for allotments right across Winchester and across the district. If we're going to see more building of flats and houses with small gardens, it's essential that we have more allotments so that people have the chance to grow food."

The Winchester New Allotment Society is holding an open day at Park Road allotments this Saturday 16th August from 2-5 pm. For more information contact: Ann Slaughter on 01962 880718.
