Liberal Democrat Parliamentary campaigner, Martin Tod, joined allotment holders in Park Road last Saturday to mark National Allotment week.

Exhibits at the open afternoon in north Winchester included displays by Winchester & District Beekeepers Association, the Save Barton Farm Group, the Winchester & District Cats Protection League and the Hampshire Organic Gardening Group.

Allotment holder, Brian Botwright, also displayed his impressive organic vegetable patch.

Mr Tod commented:

"It was a beautiful afternoon. The view from Park Road allotments across Barton Farm is stunning. On an afternoon like this, you can fully understand why allotments are getting more and more popular - at least here in Winchester."

"Not only do allotment holders get cheap, local, healthy food, but there are almost no food miles. It was also great to see how you can get great results organically."

"There's a big waiting list for allotments right across Winchester and across the district. If we're going to see more building of flats and houses with small gardens, it's essential that we have more allotments."
