Protect our local schools

Lib Dem campaigners across the country are fighting to stop Conservative plans that would mean parents and teachers have no say over the running of local schools.

The Government has announced that it will force every school in England to become an academy, abolishing parent governors and handing the school over to new owners.  In Winchester, no school is currently an academy.  All will be forced to change.

In Hampshire, this makes no sense.  84% of Hampshire schools are already rated 'good' or 'outstanding'.

In Winchester, it makes even less sense. All our schools are rated 'good' or 'outstanding'!

We think local parents and teachers know what’s best for their school. Parent governors do a valuable service to the community. They should be applauded, not abolished.

Forcing every school in Winchester and across Hampshire to become an academy and give up local control would be a mistake.

Ultimately it will be the pupils that suffer. Our schools are better because of the involvement of parents and staff.

Please help us protect our local schools

I/we the undersigned back the campaign against the Conservatives' plan to end local control of schools and force all Hampshire's schools to become academies.
