Buy Local, Back Britain

Supporting our farmers, shops, and local jobs across Winchester, Meon Valley and the Upper Itchen

Buy Local Back Britain

Danny Chambers MP is standing up for our local businesses against Trump’s tariffs.

As Donald Trump’s trade war imposes 10% tariff on almost all British exports to the US, small businesses, farmers, and local producers here in Hampshire face a major new challenge. Winchester’s Liberal Democrat MP, Danny Chambers, has launched a Buy Local, Back Britain campaign to rally support for local jobs and stand firm in the face of economic uncertainty.

Why Buy Local, Back Britain?

  • Support Local Jobs: Tariffs from the US and tax hikes at home are squeezing British businesses. Buying local helps keep people in work and helps our high streets to thrive.
  • Protect Our Farmers: Our local farmers are already under pressure. Cheap, lower-welfare imports, like hormone-treated beef and chlorine-washed chicken, risk undercutting them further.
  • Champion Quality British Products: From Alresford watercross to Hambledon wine, we’re proud of what we produce here in Winchester.

Back British Farming

Danny has recently met with farmers across Hampshire who shared their deep concerns:

  • The impact of stock movement restrictions due to Blue Tongue.
  • The closure of local abattoirs and livestock markets, pushing up costs.
  • Ongoing anxieties over animal welfare standards being compromised by new trade deals.

Backing Business in Parliament

Danny Chambers has taken action in Westminster to protect our local economy:

  • Voted for the Lib Dem "Buy British" amendment to create a UK-wide campaign and label to promote locally made goods.
  • Called on the Government to reform business rates and cancel the harmful jobs tax.
  • Challenged ministers to match Canada’s "Buy Canadian" model with a proper public push to support homegrown businesses.
