Danny Chambers calls for villages to have more say over speed limits
Winchester MP Danny Chambers has called for local communities to be given greater powers to introduce safer speed limits in their villages, following concerns raised by residents across the constituency.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Danny highlighted the frustration of residents in villages including Littleton, Crawley, Hambledon and Droxford, where communities have been campaigning for lower speed limits and safer roads.
Despite local support for measures such as 30mph limits, Hampshire County Council has repeatedly resisted requests for changes, even where communities have offered to fund traffic calming measures themselves.
The issue has also attracted BBC coverage, with residents highlighting the dangers posed by speeding traffic to pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.
Danny has called on the Government to consider giving local communities greater powers to make decisions about speed limits, particularly as local government arrangements are reviewed.
Local Liberal Democrats have long campaigned for safer roads across Winchester and its surrounding villages, including lower speed limits where appropriate, safer crossings and better enforcement.
Danny believes that residents who know their roads best should have a greater say in making them safer for everyone.
