Lib Dems challenge Conservative County over online-only tip bookings

Liberal Democrat County Councillors have secured a rethink over access to Hampshire's household waste recycling centres, following concerns that online-only bookings are excluding some residents.

Conservative-run Hampshire County Council removed its telephone booking service earlier this year, meaning appointments at Household Waste Recycling Centres now have to be made online.

Local Liberal Democrats have raised concerns that the change particularly affects older and vulnerable residents who may not have access to the internet or feel confident using online services. Some have been left dependent on friends, relatives or neighbours simply to access a basic council service.

Other councils, including neighbouring Liberal Democrat-led West Sussex and Oxfordshire, continue to offer telephone support for residents unable to book online.

Following pressure from Liberal Democrat councillors, Hampshire's Cabinet has now agreed to look again at the issue, including whether an automated or AI-enabled telephone booking system could provide a lower-cost alternative.

Local Liberal Democrats have welcomed the rethink and say they will continue pressing for an accessible option that ensures nobody is excluded from essential council services.

While online booking works well for many residents, Liberal Democrats believe it should not be the only option. Digital services should make accessing council facilities easier, not create additional barriers for those who need support.

Digital first, but not digital only.
