Lib Dems fight for Droxford Fire Station after rebuild postponed
Local Liberal Democrats are continuing to fight for Droxford Fire Station after Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Authority voted to postpone its planned rebuild.
The decision on 8 October came despite strong opposition from residents and councillors, with more than 1,000 people signing a petition and over 100 attending a rally outside the station, including Winchester MP Danny Chambers and local Liberal Democrat councillors Anne Small, Jerry Pett and David Ablitt.
Speaking at the rally, Danny highlighted the importance of firefighters as extreme weather and wildfire risks increase.
The existing fire station has serious structural problems, including its roof. While the Fire Service has confirmed that there are no plans to close Droxford Fire Station, the decision leaves the station without a firm rebuilding date or published replacement plan.
Anne, Jerry and David addressed the Fire Authority at its meeting, warning that a prolonged delay could put the station's future at risk.
Cllr Anne Small said:
"We understand that there's no plan to close the station, and we've done our very best to convey that message to residents.
"However, we are still fearful that because of the station's vulnerabilities, there is the risk the building becomes unsafe before the rebuild is scheduled."
Anne also questioned what would happen if the building became unsafe before rebuilding could begin, whether the works would be brought forward and what arrangements would be made for the firefighters.
Local Liberal Democrats are continuing to press for a credible timetable and clear contingency arrangements to protect Droxford's firefighters and the communities they serve.
Cllr Jerry Pett said:
"We need a credible plan to protect its future, with a clear timetable for rebuilding. We'll keep working with residents and fellow councillors to secure that."
