River Park lido plans takes a major step forward under Lib Dems
Plans to bring the former River Park Leisure Centre site back into use have taken a major step forward, with Lib Dem-run Winchester City Council selecting Sea Lanes as its preferred bidder.
Sea Lanes, which already operates outdoor swimming venues in Brighton and Canary Wharf, is proposing a heated outdoor swimming pool, outdoor padel courts, a café and a free splash pad for children.
The decision follows extensive public engagement, with a lido among the most frequently suggested uses for the site.
Local Lib Dem Cllr Kathleen Becker said: “When we started this process last year, we said we wanted members of the public to be able to have a proper say during the process, and well over 1,000 people have done that.”
Sea Lanes will now have a 12-month option period to develop its proposals, secure funding and prepare a planning application. Residents will have further opportunities to comment through the planning process.
Local Lib Dem Cllr Nathan Eve said: “River Park is such an important part of our community, so it’s really exciting to see plans for a lido taking another big step forward.
“There’s still work to do, and residents must continue to have the opportunity to have their say as the plans develop.”
The proposals build on investment across River Park, including the new playpark, refurbished tennis courts and recently opened community pavilion. The Council has made clear that redevelopment should complement the wider park and its existing sports and recreation facilities.
