We Must Protect Nature
Nature across Winchester and our country is under threat.
This Labour government was elected on a promise of protecting nature after years of neglect by the previous Conservative government.
But instead of enhancing nature, they're damaging it even further: rolling back biodiversity nature gain rules, weakening safeguards for protected habitats and removing schemes that promote sustainable farming.
Danny Chambers, Liberal Democrat MP for Winchester, said:
“We are incredibly lucky here in Winchester to be home to globally rare chalk streams and some of the most precious landscapes in the South Downs. Once these habitats are damaged, they cannot simply be replaced elsewhere.”
“Weakening environmental protections now would put our rivers, chalk grasslands and wildlife at real risk.”
"I am joining the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the South Downs National Park Authority in calling for the government to live up to its promises and enhance nature.”
